One of my first jobs involved asking people if they wanted garlic bread with their pizza. I had a red-checked shirt and a wrap-around red skirt and little plastic name tag, complete with company logo, and every Friday night, I answered the phone and took orders.
This was while I was still at school. It’s a been a while – and many jobs – since then. But I still love talking to people (and I’m still pretty happy to talk about bread, too!). I love finding out about things and telling other people – sharing good stories, helping people discover new things, making connections. I also love helping to polish other people’s stories, planning and guiding projects, and making sense out of mess.
My work has been published in print and online for outlets ranging from travel magazines in London to capital city newspapers here in Australia. I’ve been lucky enough to work on some amazing titles and brands and learn from some of best editors in the business, including roles as editor of SBS Food Online, associate editor at Country Style magazine, editor at delicious. magazine, publisher at Murdoch Books and editor of the Epicure section of The Age. I’ve contributed to print and online products ranging from body+soul to government newsletters, and worked as a sub-editor and copy editor for newspapers, magazines, books and online. I’ve written about everything from social enterprises to spice and television to travel. (Take a look at my portfolio page for a small sample of my work in recent years, or visit my LinkedIn profile for more details of the work I have done over the years. ).
Along the way, I’ve fed my appetite for learning new things with a degree in Wine Science from Charles Sturt University, a diploma in Wine Marketing from the University of Adelaide, a nine-month cooking course at Leiths in London, numerous photography courses and a certificate in social media marketing. I'm currently studying for a Masters in Human Nutrition at Deakin University.
And when I’m not working? You can see what else I love over at my Passions page.
"Kylie has all the traits of an excellent editor - smart, incisive and creative, with a hardwired knack for a good yarn and a compelling story angle. I was lucky enough to have her as my commissioning editor when she worked at SBS Food and she was a delight to work with. If you need someone to help with writing or editing projects, she is a very wise choice indeed."
